News from the Pitch

The 1st XI National League campaign against relegation started again on Saturday 11th February. The league is tough and with injuries and availability plaguing our first team we wish them the best of luck for the second half of the season. On a brighter note congratulations to Steph Mill who has been elected to the position of Vice-Captain for the second half of the season.

The 2nd XI have recently braved some pretty horrific 2012 winter weather to beat both Cumbernauld and Greenock away. The first game post-Christmas saw a home loss to Dumfries which unfortunately did not reflect some of the great play that Rhonas (um) Rottweilers came up with. The match against East Kilbride was frozen off and looks like it will be rescheduled for 11th March 2012. News from the Sidelines

Arrivals A big welcome to Ashley Thomson who has joined us from East Kilbride and has already scored in every game she has played. Also to Colm Breakey who joins mum Niamh, dad Leon and brothers Cormac and Lewis in the Breakey household. We hope to see the full Breakey squad supporting the 2nds, maybe when the sun decides to make a reappearance on a Saturday afternoon. We also have some new(ish) faces at training, so please remember to say hello to folk you dont know.

Departures Two of our physios are moving on to pastures new. Caroline Sweetman has taken up a new position in Fife and has returned to living in Edinburgh and playing for Watsonians (booooo). Katy McKinnon has been offered a job in Yorkshire and will be moving there with her fiancé in March. Congratulations to both Caroline and Katy and we wish them all the best with the future and hope that they keep in touch.

Fundraising

The club has made a stupendous effort this season on the fundraising front and we want to continue this through the rest of the season and on into the next. A massive thanks to everyone who braved the elements and the punters at the recent Scottish cup games at Hampden. Those were two cold days but we raised just under £500 for the club so it was time and effort well spent.

A huge thank you to Carol Cooke, her enthusiasm, doggedness and to everyone who responded, dug deep and pushed raffle tickets onto all unsuspecting friends and colleagues. The festive raffle raised just over £1000 for the hockey section alone and resulted in some folks winning top prizes (from potty putting to hotel nights in Athens).

The GASC Ball will be taking place on Saturday 24th March 2012. Stephanie Barnet is co-ordinating hockey section tickets (money to be in by 20th February) but if you know of anyone who is interested in taking a table, they can contact Celia Hill to book. The ball will be raising money not only for GASC but for http://www.heartsandballs.org.uk/. From last years shindig, the ladies hockey section received £1000 from the money made on the evening, so not only is it a great night out, but a chance to help raise more pennies.
Bar Refurb

We have just received the news that the New Anniesland bar refurbishment is about to begin. The Gordon Mackay bar will be in memory of a former Accies rugby player who passed away a few years ago and will bring the facilities into the twenty-first century. The ladies are even getting new toilets! There will be a grand re-opening party (for the bar, not the toilets): news to follow.

A successful Halloween and Fireworks Night!

A big thankyou to everyone that helped make The Annual Accies Halloween and Fireworks Night a great success!

Congratulations to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in winning Best Dressed.

So much effort went into costumes this year - a special mention to Sir Trev and the Ompalumpas!

Upside Down Drinking and the Disco went down a storm and lets not forget the fireworks!

Big thanks to Nigel who kindly organised the display!

Hi Everyone

Our wonderful club captain, Erica has started the tradition of writing monthly newsletters! Its a great idea - keeping us all up to date with news on and off the pitch, achievements and all our fun events.

News from the Pitch – Annual Accies Tournament

Unfortunately, I didn’t manage to see a whole lot of the hockey at the tournament but I hear reports that there was a lot of great play. Sadly, neither the Whites nor the Blues managed to retain the shield this year, with the Blues placing highest by reaching the semi-finals. By agreement with GHK, the Whites came in joint seventh but this only means that next year will see an upwards improvement! From the little of what I did see, there were some fine examples of goalkeeping from Fluff and considerable amounts of good play through the midfields.

The tournament was won by Hillhead A who beat the new kids on the Accies tournament block, Stirling Wanderers in the final.

The club also raised £470 for the money pot and thanks go to everyone who made baking, brought raffle prizes and completed the myriad of tasks on the day, including organising the two teams. It was also great to see our new coach help out with squad numbers and even manage to fit in a little coaching too.

News from the Sidelines

1st XI regular, Kirsten Fulton brought along her weary self and her beautiful new baby boy, Archie to meet the club on tournament day. At just six days old, Archie slept through all the cooing and excitement that the club could muster. Kirsten has her fingers crossed that this sleeping habit will continue and Helen was on hand to offer her best mothering tips.

2nd XI defender, Niamh Breakey is taking a break from playing this season as she prepares to add to her brood. Niamh will hopefully be welcoming another future hockey player to the Accies community in January but in the meantime, we will hopefully see her, whistle in hand, running up and down the sidelines.

Congratulations go to Anna Cameron and Alix Gemmill who have both secured new positions in Ernst & Young’s Edinburgh office. Both players have chosen to remain with Accies for the upcoming season and the NL Division II campaign. We wish them the best of luck with their new jobs and the commute to training!

A wonderful day was had by all at Windyedge on Sunday. Even the sun came out and I think its safe to say most people went home with a sly bit of sun burn :)

A big congratulations to the Winners - Hillhead A

Accies managed to raise some vital funds for the coming season through our wonderful bake sale and tuck shop.

A huge thankyou to Erica, our club captain for being the mastermind of operations. You did an incredible job!

Thanks to all teams involved, the technical desk, umpires, players, raffle donators, sellers, bakers and
the Weather for making it such a fun and enjoyable day of hockey.

We are looking forward to next year already.

Annual Hockey Tournament

Glasgow Accies Ladies Hockey Club are hosting their annual hockey tournament on:

Sunday the 21st of August 2011

at Windyedge Pitches

9am - 6pm.

Both our 1st XI and 2nd XI teams will be playing plus many other teams from in and around Glasgow.

We welcome all academicals and friends of academicals to come and support our girls.

We won the tournament last year so the pressure is on to do so again!

There will be refreshments, BBQ and an exceptional raffle full of lux prizes...
